The only girl. With six brothers. Three older. Three younger.
I was talking with my only local MommyFriend the other day as we sat on my couch while our two-months-apart children napped quietly. She’s due a month before me. She’s having another girl. I said that I was sure that I was having a boy. She was telling me, honestly, about her fears when she thought she might be having a boy. She said, “I think some Moms are just better able to handle boys.”
I’m one of those Moms, I suppose. It’s really in the way that I was raised, especially by my Dad. I love sports. Even if the boys don’t play sports, I like activities that are generally gender-labeled as boy things. I had the whole He-Man set. I had Transformers… you know, in the 80’s, not now. Yes, I had Barbies. But they played in the mud.
On the flip side of my MommyFriend’s comment, I suppose that there are those who are better fit to raise girls… which means that there are those that are not equipped with the “right stuff” to raise a girl. I guess I’m somehow lucky that, even though she lives a state away, I still get to watch her grow, change and mature. I still “have” a girl, I just don’t have to put up with the back talk on a daily basis when she hits that age. (HA DENISE!)
That said, we’re honestly thrilled to be welcoming LittleBrother Hatfield into our family as of December 2007. He’s growing right on schedule. His kidneys and ureters are properly formed and functioning as they should be. His heart is strong at 144bpm. He waved at us. And wouldn’t hold still for the tech to take a picture of his manhood. (Though we saw it plain as day; he just kept kicking his legs when we were trying to get a still shot.)
He’ll join the ranks of Hatfield men. And I’ll be horribly outnumbered in my own household. And when I need a girly-girl fix, I’ll make my way to Munchkin’s pink and purple bedroom and sleep under her giant pink silky bedspread. Until she wants privacy which will mean NO ADULTS. Ah, girls.
And so, I present to you: LittleBrother Hatfield, middle name yet to be determined.

I need to buy some big/little brother stuff… and something special for the big sister. No? (And something for JD, just because!)

I love the name LittleBrother!
When my sister was pregnant, she made a Big Brother book for my nephew. He was three, I think.
She scanned it all into the computer and did something like:
When John was a baby, he slept a lot.
He cried some.
He smiled a lot.
When the new baby comes, he will sleep a lot.
He will cry some.
He will smile a lot.
Something like that. One picture and line of text per page. He LOVED it. She put the pages in one of those spiral presentation notebooks with plastic pages. That was 14 years ago, so there is probably a better way to do it now. In fact, I think you can make board books with your pictures on sites like shutterfly.
Congratulations!

Congrats on a beautiful, healthy little boy. The excitement takes over quickly, doesn’t it? Even if you hoped for the opposite gender.

Congratulations Jenna. I love the name too!
I have two boys, and I love the “brother” dynamics - we have a fun house.
When our JD was born, we got a book called “Big Brother, Little Brother” by Penny Dale. It has lovely pictures. The story is sweet, the language is simple and it covers the inevitable sharing issues too - we loved it.
