Adoption Reading Challenge 2012

Adoption Reading Challenge 2012I’ve decided to host the Adoption Reading Challenge again in 2012. It was a hit in 2011, and I thought we could continue our learning, reading, ranting and social changing into the new year. This page will serve as our landing page to link to others, share our reviews and remind ourselves how many books we’re going to read. To sign up for the Adoption Reading Challenge, hop over to the announcement post and sign up!

Levels/# of Books:

Level 1: Read 3 books about adoption, non-fiction or fiction.
Level 2: Read 6 books about adoption, 3 non-fiction/3 fiction.
Level 3: Read 12 books about adoption, 6 non-fiction/6 fiction.
Level 4: Read 20 books about adoption, 10 non-fiction/10 fiction.

Rules:

1. Choose a level. Read your books! Your first level is simply a toe dip in the adoption book world. The other levels require you to read both fiction and non-fiction for a mental comparison of how the two are treated.

2. You do not need to be a blogger to participate. Just leave books you’re reading in the comments of this post so others can get ideas!

3. You don’t have to pick your books at the beginning. This is a read-as-you-go challenge.

4. You do not have to be a member of the adoption triad to participate in this challenge. You do not need to be an adoptive parent, birth parent, or adoptee. You do not need to be a social worker or adoption professional. You simply need to have a desire to challenge yourself to read books about adoption this year. Last year, I was asked why those who aren’t touched by adoption would want to participate in this challenge. Here’s the answer: Adoption is a huge theme in books (and movies/TV). Reading it with that in mind, to look at how it is treated in both fiction and non-fiction is a great way to become mindful of something that might be outside of your immediate experience.

5. Start date is January 1, 2012. End date is December 31, 2012. You can join at any time during the year!

6. New this year: We have a Goodreads group for the challenge. Participation is not mandatory. Why should you use it? It would be great if you’re not a blogger (easy, quick interaction and reviews) or if you don’t like to review every book on your blog. It would also be great to help others find books. Do not feel pressured to use it. It’s just there as some members thought it might be a great idea.

And now, use this page to link up any reviews you have posted on your own blog by signing the linky with each link. Feel free to have discussions in the comments regarding suggestions. And, if you’re not a blogger, please use this space to share the books that you have read. Easy!

  4. I’m an adult adoptee and have known all my life. I was found a few years ago at age 40 and it inspired me to write a book using that as its foundation. This is NOT a memoir or a heartstring-tugger; it’s more of an offbeat, humorous suspense in the vein of Carl Hiaasen. I’m not making light of adoption, but merely using a fictional adult adoptee’s bizarre background to give readers a little diverting fun. I’d be honored to be considered as a candidate for your reading challenge.
